A 2-Storey Sports Retail Store in the Netherlands
A large two-storey sports retail shop in the Netherlands, with 34,400 sqf floorspace (17,200 sqf per floor), is deploying entrance analytics across both levels. The store has:
- 2x entrances – first floor 14m wide; second floor 15m wide
- 1x staircase connecting floors (4m wide)
- Ceiling height: 4m across both floors
The primary goal is to accurately count visitors at each entrance, track traffic flow between floors, identify peak hours, and gain demographic insights into who the shoppers are. This provides reliable data to measure conversion opportunities, optimise staffing levels, and ensure privacy-compliant analytics.
Custom Metrics for Stakeholders
While system design ensures coverage, the true value of next-gen people counting lies in actionable metrics tailored to different stakeholders in the retail business. Each group – from store managers to operations teams to marketing executives, requires specific insights to optimise performance.
The following table outlines key custom metrics and how they serve different stakeholder needs:
Stakeholder | Metrics | Description | Business Value |
Store Manager | Footfall (In/Out) Turn-In Rate Queue Length Queue Abandonment Staff On-floor Presence Staff-Shopper Interaction Duration Staff Response Lag |
Tracks store traffic, shopper inflow, and checkout efficiency | Optimise staffing and daily operations |
Operation Team | Shelf Fill Rate Shelf Servicing Lag Box on Floor Alerts |
Measures merchandising execution and shelf availability | Maintain store standards and minimise lost sales |
Marketing Team | Engagement Rate Product Engagement Demographics Returning Visitors |
Evaluates campaign visibility, shopper interest, and customer profile | Assess campaign ROI and refine targeting |
HR / Workforce Planning | Staff-Shopper Ratio | Tracks staff efficiency and service quality | Improve workforce allocation and training |
Headquarters | Dwell-to-Buy Ratio Hot vs Dead Zones Store Benchmark vs Cluster Average |
Provides holistic performance benchmarking | Guide strategic decisions and capital allocation |
System Design for Entrance Analytics
The proposed system design provides full coverage of both the first and second floors, ensuring accurate people counting and demographic capture across all entrances and staircases.
At the first-floor entrance, a combination of 1x Pro2 and 1x Pro1 is mounted to fully cover the 14m-wide entrance, ensuring accurate people counting and demographic capture. Additionally, 1x Pro1 is installed above the 4m-wide staircase to measure inter-floor traffic flow (Up/Down). The Pro2 acts as the master device, processing data from all Pro1 units and providing a unified view of the first-floor traffic.
The second-floor entrance is 15m wide, requiring 2x Pro1 devices strategically placed to cover the entire span. These units are connected to the first-floor Pro2, which serves as the central hub for processing and reporting, consolidating all entrance and staircase analytics into a single platform.

Metrics Measured:
- Footfall (In/Out for both floors)
- Outside Traffic
- Visit Duration
- Turn-in Rate
- Group Counting
- Demographics (Age, Gender)
- Staff Exclusion
- Inter-floor Flow (via staircase, first floor only)
Devices | Quantity | Unit Cost (EUR) | Total Cost (EUR) |
3D Pro 2 | 1 | 609 | 609 |
Pro 1 | 4 | 131 | 524 |
Total Cost of Ownership | EUR 1,133 |
Why FootfallCam Stands Apart
This system design not only ensures seamless coverage across all entrances and staircases but also unlocks a scalable framework for delivering stakeholder-specific metrics. By combining Pro2 and Pro1 devices, retailers can reduce hardware costs by up to 50%, while still capturing a rich dataset that translates into insights on traffic flow, customer engagement, workforce productivity, and store performance.
In short, the value extends beyond accurate counting, it provides the intelligence needed for data-driven decision-making across every level of the organisation.
